Vidarbha earned a vital first innings lead of 115 runs against Pondicherry but only after their bowlers were made to toil on Day 3 of their four-day Ranji Trophy Elite Group C match at the VCA's Jamtha Stadium.
Resuming on 107/1, Pondicherry batters Ritesh Gudge (95) and Nikhil Gangta (54) extended their second wicket partnership to 145 runs before the latter was dismissed by Parth Rekhade. Vidarbha hit back, reducing Pondicherry to 220/7, thanks to a fine spell from part-timer Aman Mokhade.
However, Mohit Kale stood firm and batted with the tail, stretching the Pondicherry innings to 313. He was the last man to fall for 78.
Mokhade and Rekhade claimed three wickets each while Harsh Dubey took 2/79.
Vidarbha were 22/1 at close of play, leading by 137 runs.
