VCA NEWS: Sensational win for Vidarbha in Ranji Trophy

Vidarbha senior men’s team pulled off a sensational victory in their Ranji Trophy Group D match against Gujarat at the VCA’s Jamtha Stadium on Thursday.

Seasoned left-arm spinner Aditya Sarvate turned the match on its head with career-best match figures of 11/81 as Gujarat, needing only 73 runs for victory, were bundled out for 54 in their second innings.

Sarvate, who had claimed 5/64 to restrict Gujarat’s first innings, picked up six more wickets in the second innings for only 17 runs as Vidarbha pulled off an unlikely 18-run victory.

Vidarbha, thus, ended up successfully defending the lowest fourth-innings target (73) in the history of the Ranji Trophy. The previous best was 78 runs defended by Bihar against Delhi (48 all out) in 1948-49.

Vidarbha’s first innings tally of 74 was also their ninth lowest in Ranji Trophy.

It was Sarvate’s third 10-wkt haul in first-class cricket. He was well-supported by fellow left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey who had match figures of 5/38.

The senior team, led by Akshay Wadkar, looked down and out after being shot out for 74 on the opening day. After conceding a first-innings lead of 182 runs to Gujarat, the hosts looked headed for an innings defeat when they were tottering on 149/7 in their second innings.

But a fine counter-attacking knock of 69 off 53 balls (4x4, 6x5) by Jitesh Sharma and his 78-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Nachiket Bhute (42), gave Vidarbha a glimmer of hope. However, with the tail failing to wag, Vidarbha were bowled out for 254 runs, leaving Gujarat needing just 73 runs to register an outright victory.

Vidarbha spinners, however, had other ideas. They maintained a nagging line and length at both ends and tightened the screws. Gujarat batsmen simply crumbled under pressure and were bowled out in 33.3 overs.

Vidarbha now have 19 points from six matches and will take on second-placed Punjab (26 points) in their last league match in Mohali from Jan 24-27.
